Why Choose Mickley First School?

Welcome to Mickley First School, where every child is known, every family is supported, and every opportunity is embraced. Nestled in the heart of the Tyne Valley, our small and friendly school offers an inviting and nurturing environment that encourages children to thrive both academically and socially.

Why Choose Mickley First School?

A Close-Knit Community

At Mickley, we pride ourselves on being a small school with a big heart. Our small size allows us to know every child and their family personally, creating a strong sense of community and belonging. With only 60–70 families, we provide a warm, inclusive environment where parents and children feel supported and involved. Our mixed-age classes give children the opportunity to form close bonds with their teachers and peers, helping them to adapt and grow with confidence throughout their time at the school.

Early Years Excellence

We are excited to be developing our Early Years provision, now welcoming children as young as two years old. Our spacious, activity-filled early years classroom is a lively, welcoming space where the youngest learners can explore, play, and grow. In addition to the large room dedicated to Early Years, our historic Victorian classrooms create a warm, friendly atmosphere for all ages, enriched by a deep sense of history and connection to the local community.

Outside of Classroom Experiences

At Mickley, education goes beyond the classroom. Our close relationship with St. George’s Church and regular visits to Cherryburn offer rich learning experiences that celebrate local heritage and traditions. We also maintain a strong connection to Prudhoe, particularly during festive times like Christmas, when our school takes part in local events and celebrations.

Strong Parent-School Partnership

We believe that education is a partnership, and we are committed to maintaining open and supportive relationships with our families. The office team regularly checks in with parents, ensuring everyone feels informed and supported. This close communication ensures that you can always feel confident your child is being educated in a calm, happy environment.

We are always working to keep our families informed and engaged. Our School newsletters and Facebook updates offer regular insights into school life, upcoming events, and your child’s achievements.

Flexible Wraparound Care

We understand the challenges of modern family life, which is why we offer flexible breakfast and after-school care. Our wraparound care ensures that children are well looked after and engaged, allowing parents peace of mind before and after the school day. The wraparound sessions are staffed by School staff within our School building so the transition to and from the wraparound to classroom learning is smooth and familiar for the children.

High Standards of Learning

While we are a small school, we have high aspirations for every child. Our mixed-age classes allow for a personalised approach to learning, and we are proud of the strong outcomes our students achieve. With structured transitions to Ovingham and Highfield Middle Schools, we ensure that every child is well-prepared for the next step in their educational journey. Through transition activities, we make sure your child moves on confidently and with ease.

A Warm and Inclusive Environment

At Mickley, small does not mean limited. Our classrooms are vibrant, inclusive spaces where all children, regardless of background or ability, are welcomed and supported. With dedicated staff who care deeply about each child’s progress, children will be encouraged to develop both academically and personally, growing into confident, well-rounded individuals.

Relationships with Local Schools

Our children have opportunities throughout their time at Mickley to mix with children from other local First Schools such as Prudhoe Castle and Ovingham through activity days, School trips and the Year 4 residential. This bond between the Schools creates a wider network for our children which can be reassuring during the transition to Middle School.
