Our School Council and Eco-Committee?

At Mickley First School, our School Council and Eco-Committee members are a highly valued group of children who represent the voice and opinions of all the children within our school.

Through our councils, we aim to develop young leadership skills, whilst supporting student democracy and encouraging pupil voice. Most importantly, our strong team of Councillors aim to promote the well-being of all children within our school and help children to develop an awareness of local and global issues.

The children on these councils have the  opportunity to get more involved in the way the school is run and to be part of projects that raise awareness of environmental issues whilst trying to encourage all pupils to take  positive action on climate change. It benefits the whole school, pupils and teachers, because it provides opportunities for pupils to communicate their feelings as well as influence decisions that are made.

At Mickley First School the student council is made up of representatives from each class voted in by the children. At the beginning of the year each council is given a range of tasks/responsibilities that support school self evaluation and future development planning. Along with this they work on priorities they have identified through pupil voice activities and through their own suggestions.

What we have been up to:

• We took part in planning activities for our Walk to School and Safety week. We created a poster for the newsletter to try to promote the need for drivers to slow down outside our school.
• The School Council collected ideas about activities on the yard at playtimes and fed this information back to the classes.
• The Eco-Committee are looking at ways to reduce the school’s carbon footprint and are beginning a lunchtime campaign to eat more and waste less. We are also thinking about ways to reduce the energy consumption within school.
