Fruit and Vegetable Scheme
The School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme (SFVS) helps your child achieve 5 A DAY.
Fruit and vegetables are a good source of the nutrients that children need and form part of a balanced healthy diet.
It is recommended that children – like adults – eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day. Research shows that on average children in England eat only about three portions , with many eating fewer.
If your child is aged four to six and attends a fully state funded infant, primary or special school in England, they are entitled to receive a free piece of fruit or vegetable each school day.
The fruit and vegetables are delivered to school several times per week to ensure freshness, there is a variety of fruit and vegetables including;
- apples
- pears
- carrots
- tomatoes
- bananas
- easy peel citrus fruit such as satsumas
At Mickley First School ‘snack time’ is enjoyed in individual classes after mid-morning break. Children in year 3 and 4 are encouraged to bring a piece of fruit to school each day to eat at this time.
